RCP58WC converter

Application

The converter is an essential element of RCPX8 system. To each system one converter is required, no matter how many readers are installed in a system. It should be placed near the computer, on which RCPX8 is installed. In RCPX8 systems it has three functions: firstly, it enables to introduce easily personal identity cards to the system's data base; secondly, it is an intermediary in communication between a computer and a network of main readers (conversion of RS232 into RS485); thirdly, it provides galvanic insulation between a computer and a network of main readers.

Construction

The converter is equipped with an electronic microprocessor circuit. It has a built-in RS232/485 converter. Inside of the metal cage there is a slot which reads chip cards codes. A galvanic insulation enables to insulate a computer from the network of main readers, thus protecting it from inducted voltages (supertension) which can appear on sometimes very long wires connecting RCPX8 system readers. On the back side of the cage bases are installed: DB9 to connect the reader to COM port in a computer with RS232 extension cable and two RJ12 bases (they function identically) to connect the converter to RCPX8 system with LK466 cable. Both cables are delivered in a set with a converter and allow to connect the device to the computer and RCPX8 system readers' net safely and flawlessly. RJ12 base, which is not used in any way, can serve to connect alternatively RCPX8 system's power supply (instead of connecting it to LPS1 wall terminal.)

The principle of operation

RCP58WC converter, due to the galvanic insulation used between the computer and the readers' net is supplied from two sides. From  RS485 readers' side, apart from communication signals A and B, there is 12V – the same which supplies main readers. From the computer's side special, energy-saving electronic systems were used – with no need to use another power supply. In converter's mode the device works wholly automatically without any system operator's work. In case of entering identity cards' codes to the system, an operator's task is inserting a given identity card into the slot of the reader's cage, choosing a proper function in RCP58 computer program and, after the notice on the screen, sliding out the identity card from the reader.
